Ch.5 Central And Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
What are the 2 major control systems
Central Nervous and peripheral system
What system connects to the nervous system
Central nervous system:
Controls brain and spinal cord sensory
What systems connects to peripheral nervous system
Somatic neurons ( allows skeletal muscle response) and autonomic neurons
What is an agonist drug
A drug/ chemical that initiates(stimulates) a response
What is antagonist drug
A drug/chemical that binds to a receptor but causes no reaction( blocks)
Where are the parasympathetic fibers located
Thoracic and lumbar region
Where are the sympathetic fibers located
Cranial and sacral
What is the neurotransmitter for sympathetic
Norepinephrine- produces adrenaline
What neurotransmitter is found in the parasympathetic
Acetylcholine- chemical produced to transmit nerve impulses. Destroyed by cholinesterase
What is cholinergic drug
A drug causing stimulation of a receptor for acetylcholine
Parasympathetic effects
Decreases HR, BP and RR
BRONCHOCONSTRICTS!!
Miosis- eye constriction
GI- increase motility
Insulin- increased secretion
= helps to digest food
What is an anticholinergic drug
Releases acetylcholine and allows muscle relaxation
Used to help treat BRONCHOSPASM!!
What drug can be used to prevent cholinergic response
Atrovent
Where is adrenergic found and what are its effects
Adrenergic is produced from the sympathetic system
BRONCHODILATION!!!
Mydriasis- Dilated eyes
GI- decreased motility
Insulin- decreased secretion
= puts a hold on digestion ( creates stress belly)
What drug can be used to prevent sympathetic response
Albuterol - relaxes smooth muscles in airways
