Ch 19 Diuretic Flashcards
What is diuretic agents
Agent that increases urine output.
Excess fluid in the body can be noted by auscultation of crackles in the lungs
What is a nephron
A functional unit of the kidney
What is Na+
70% is reabsorbed in the proximal tubules
K+
Reabsorbed mostly into proximal tubules
What is osmotic diuretic
Blocks transcription of NaCl in the proximal tubule and descending loop of henle
MOA of carbonic anhydrase inhibitors
Potential for metabolic acidosis
MOA of loop diuretic
Furosemide(lasix)
Indication of loop diuretic
CHF, pulmonary and vascular edema
Most potent class of diuretic
Loop diuretics have been successful in the management of ARDS
Indication of thiazide diuretic
First line therapy for mild hypertension
Averse effects
Hypovalemia, and acid base disorders are most common
Hypokalemia and metabolic alkalosis
Special situations
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding: can dehydrate the baby
Hypokalemia is a more common complication
