What is heat exhaustion?
Inability to cope with heat stress
Sign and symptoms of heat illness (7)
- Fatigue
- Nausea and or vomiting
- loss of appetite
- Exercise associated muscle cramps
- LOR. Dizziness and possible fainting
- Elevated H.R and R.R
- SCTM Pain cool clammy or slightly flush
Treatment Principles for heat Exhaustion (5)
- Rest
- Avoid further heat stress
- Hydrate
- Treat exercise associated muscle cramps with gentle stretching
- Evacuate if not improving
What is Heat Stroke
A life threatening emergency, patients have exaggerated heat production and inability to cool themselves. Altered mental status is an important distinguisher between heat exhaustion and head stroke
Signs and Symptoms of Heat Stroke (6)
- LOR disoriented, irritable, combative, unresponsive
- hallucinations and seizures
- ataxia
- HR & RR increase
- SCTM hot, color and moisture can vary
- temp above 104
Treatment Principles (2)
- aggressive cooling - immerse in cold water. fan the patient and spray with water.
- rapid evacuation
What is Rhabdomyolysis?
a breakdown of damaged muscle tissue that releases proteins and electrolytes into the blood which can cause damage to the heart and kidneys
Signs and symptoms of Rhabdo (4)
- muscle cramps, aches or pains that are more severe than expected.
- inability to complete a workout routine
- Tea or cola colored urine
Treatment principles for Rhabdo (3)
- hydration
- remove from heat and exercise stress
- evacuation
Evacuation guidelines for heat illness
evacuate patients unable to cope with heat
rapidly evacuation all patients who have an altered level of responsiveness secondary to heat stress.
