How are communicable diseases transmitted?
A
- person to person via bodily fluids
- blood exposure via cuts and needles
- sexual activities
- person to person direct skin contact most commonly the hands
- ingesting contaminated food, water and other objects

What are the guidelines to follow for Body Substance Isolation (BSI) to prevent yourself from exposure to communicable disease?
A
- you must assume that all persons are infected with blood-borne or other communicable disease
- use protective gloves, HEPA masks and eye protection when blood or any other body fluid exposure is possible.
in the wilderness, use your rain gear, sunglasses and bandanas. - dispose of all contaminated material properly
- obtain a Hepatitis B vaccine
- report all exposures to your employer or physician

How to prevent communicable diseases at a camp
A
- wash your hands well after going to the bathroom, before cooking, and before administering first aid
- do not share water bottles, spoons, lip balm, etc.
- do not use personal utensils in communal cooking pot.
- do not reach into food bags. always pour the food into personal container or hand.
- if you are sick, do not cook for the group
- consider isolating a sick person
- avoid eating leftovers unless they’ve been stored at less than 40 degrees and reheated
- clean cooking and eating utensils well. rinse with hot disinfecting water
- disinfect your drinking water
- cough into your elbow or clothing

Describe the 4 methods for disinfecting water
A
- Boil. only necessary to bring to rolling boil
- Filter. Use 1 micro or less pore size. choose a filter with virus disinfecting component when traveling international
- chemical treatment. Chlorine and Iodine (halogens) are effective against everything but Cryptosporidium. Chlorine Dioxide is effect agains crypto with 4 hour contact time.
- UV treatment is effect against everything.
