Ch1 Lipids Flashcards
1
Q
4 Lipid characteristics
A
- contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
- proportion of oxygen: carbon+hydrogen is smaller than carbs
- insoluble in water
- soluble in organic solvents
2
Q
Roles of lipids
A
- Cell membranes
- Source of energy
- Waterproofing
- Insulation
- Protection
3
Q
Source of energy
A
- lipids provide over 2x more energy as carbs when oxidised
- releases water
4
Q
Waterproofing
A
insoluble in water
5
Q
Insulation
A
- slow conductor of heat
- stored beneath body surface to retain body heat
- electrical insulators in myelin sheath
6
Q
Triglyceride structure
A
- three fatty acids + glycerol
- ester bond
- condensation reaction
7
Q
saturated
A
no carbon=carbon double bonds
8
Q
unsaturated
A
- mono: 1C=C bond
- poly- more than one C=C bond
9
Q
4 Trigylceride adaptations
A
- high ratio of energy storing C-H bonds: C atoms for energy storage
- low mass:energy ratio -lots energy in small volume
- large, non-polar and insoluble- doesn’t affect water potential of cell
- high H:O ratio so releases water when oxidised
10
Q
Phospholipid structure
A
2 fatty acids + glycerol + phosphate
11
Q
Phospholipid adaptations
A
- Polar- bilayer in csm
- hydrophilic phosphate head- hold surface of csm
- can form glycolipids by bonding with carbs in csm
- hydrophobic fatty acid tails- orients itself away from water
12
Q
Test for lipids
A
- Add ethanol
- Shake
- Add water
- Milky white-emulsion produced
