Democratic
Supports group interaction and decision making to solve problems
Laissez-faire
The group progresses without any attempt by the leader to control the direction
Autocratic
The leader completely controls the direction and structure of the group without allowing group interaction or decision making to solve problems
Group therapy goals
- Sharing of common feelings & concerns
- Sharing of stories & experiences
- Diminishing feelings of isolation
- Creating a community of healing & restoration
- Providing a more cost-effective environment than that of individual therapy
Children group therapy
In the form of play while talking about a common experience
Adolescent
It is especially valuable, as this age group typically has strong peer relationships
Older adult
Helps with socialization and sharing of memories
Focus of initial phase
Defines the purpose & goals of the group
Responsibilities of Initial Phase
- Group leader set a tone of respect, trust, & confidentiality among members
- Members get to know each other
- There’s a discussion about termination
Focus of Working Phase
Promote problem-solving skills to facilitate behavioral changes
Responsibilities of Working Phase
- Leader uses ther. comm. to encourage group work toward meeting goals
- Members take informal roles within the group, which may interfere with, or favor, group progress toward goals
Focus of Termination Phase
End of group sessions
Responsibilities of Termination Phase
- Members discuss termination issues
- Leader summarizes work of the group & individual contributions
Maintenance roles
Help maintain the purpose and process of the group
Task roles
Take on various tasks within the group process
ex: the recorder takes notes & records what occurs
