Tension-building phase
Abuser has minor episodes of anger and may be verbally abusive and responsible for some minor physical violence
Victim is tense and tends to accept the blame
Acute battering phase
Serious abuse takes place
Victim may try to cover up the injury or may get help
Honeymoon phase
Situation is defused for awhile
Abuser becomes loving, promises to change, and is sorry for the behavior
Victim wants to believe this and eventually the cycle begins again
Cycle recurrences
Periods of escalation and de-escalation have shorter and shorter periods of time between the two
Emotions increase in intensity
Physical violence
When physical harm occurs
Sexual violence
When sexual contact takes place without consent
Emotional violence
Behavior that minimizes an individual’s feelings of self-worth or humiliates, threatens, or intimidates
Neglect
Failure to provide:
- Physical care
- Emotional care, such as interacting with a child
- Education
- Necessary health or dental care
Economic maltreatment
Failure to provide for the needs of a victim when adequate funds are available
Victim characteristics
- Low self-esteem & feelings of helplessness, guilt and shame
- Attempts to protect the perpetrator & accepts responsibility for the abuse
- Denial of the severity of the situation
Perpetrator characteristics
- Threatens & intimidation to control victim
- Believes in physical punishment
- Possible history of substance use disorder
- Difficulty assuming typical adult roles
- Likely experienced family violence as a child
Shaken baby syndrome
Assess for intracranial hemorrhage: respiratory distress Bulging fontanelles Increase in head circumference Retinal hemorrhage
Preschoolers to adolescent assessments
- Unusual bruising
- Numerous bruising at different stages of healing
- Head injuries: LOC, PERRLA, N/V
