Two men who supervised gov. business and command armies, checked each other, only served one term (year), from the patrician class
Consuls
Military leader chosen in times of war, served for six months (cincinnatus)
Dictator
Members of the upper class, nobility
Patricians
Farmers, merchants, artisans, who made up most of the population
Plebeians
The basic military unit, 5000 men, well trained, similar to Greek phalanx
Legion
A punishment for cowardly or non loyalty in army, every tenth man from a cowardly legion would be killed
Decimate
A word that describes the characters idolized by the Romans (discipline, strength, loyalty)

When the male (father) had absolute power in a family
