CH 3 SG Flashcards
Zygote
Single cell
Difference between a genotype and a phenotype
An organism’s genotype is the set of genes that it carries. An organism’s phenotype is all of its observable characteristics
Difference between Turner’s and Klinefelter’s Syndromes
Turner syndrome (TS) is caused by having only one X chromosome (X0), and Klinefelter syndrome (KS) by having two X chromosomes and one Y chromosome (XXY)
Periods of prenatal development
-GERMINAL
-EMBRYONIC
-FETAL
Prenatal care
Critical component for health of newborn (doctors visits, ultrasounds, diet, exercise, awareness of teratrogons)
Teratogens
AN AGENT SUCH AS DISEASE, DRUGS OR OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS THAT CAN DISRUPT PRENATAL DEVELOPMENT (INCREASES RISKS OF ABNORMALITIES & DEFECTS)
Age of viability
THE AGE THAT A FETUS CAN SURVIVE OUTSIDE UTERUS IF SPECIALIZED MEDICAL CARE IS AVAILABLE (22 WEEKS/BRAIN IS SUFFICIENTLY MATURE)
Chromosomal pattern of males and females
the female is XX and the male is XY
APGAR test
Score over 7, healthy
Score of 5 or less–concern
- Appearance (Skin Color)
- Pulse (Heart Rate)
- Grimace (Reflex Irritability)
- Activity (Muscle Tone)
- Respiration
Rated 0 to 2 for each category at 1
minute and 5 minutes after birth (First test immediately after birth)
GERMINAL
1ST TWO WEEKS OF PRENATAL DEVELOPMENT (ZYGOTE (SINGLE CELL)/DIVIDES)
EMBRYONIC
INNER CELLS (IF OUTER CELLS
SUCCESSFULLY IMPLANT
BECOME AN EMBRYO)
FETAL
Genitals form, Heartbeat detectable, Brain growth critical, Enables regulation of all body functions, All body parts and systems complete in
prenatal development
Multiplying cells separate into what two distinct masses?
Placenta and embryo
DIFFERENTIATION
CELLS SPECIALIZE, TAKE DIFFERENT FORMS, REPRODUCE DIFFERENT RATES
Placenta
OUTER CELLS SURROUNDS & PROTECTS
EMBRYO THE OUTER CELLS MUST IMPLANT OR EMBED THEMSELVES INTO THE LINING OF THE UTERUS (ABOUT 50% DO NOT)
