Ch. 20 Neck Flashcards
Region of the body between the head and the thorax
Neck
How many bones are in the neck?
8
What are the 8 bones of the neck?
7 cervical vertebrae
Hyoid
Bone that lies in the anterior portion of the neck between the mandible and the larynx
hyoid
U shaped bone with an opening posteriorly and a body anteriorly
hyoid
Project from the body of the hyoid bone posteriorly
Greater horns and smaller lesser horns
Bone that does not articulate with any other bone, but is suspended by attaching muscles
hyoid
Cartilaginous organ located at the upper end of the trachea, consisting of 9 cartilages, the largest of which is the thyroid cartilage.
Larynx
Largest cartilage of the larynx
thyroid cartilage
Cartilaginous pipe that extends from the larynx above inferiorly through the neck and thorax
trachea
Endocrine gland located on either side of the trachea just below the larynx.
Thyroid gland
Gland consisting of two lobes connected across the trachea by the isthmus
thyroid gland
The thyroid gland is connected by the
isthmus
Two to four endocrine glands located on the posterior surface of the thyroid gland
parathyroid gland
Supply of the thyroid and the parathyroid glands
Superior and inferior thyroid arteries
Muscles of the neck
PSISSP
Platysma Sternocleidomastoid Infrahyoid muscles Suprahyoid muscles Scalene muscles Prevertebral muscles
Origin of platysma
Skin over the delta and pectorals major muscles
Insertion of the platysma
Lower border of the mandible
Action of platysma
Elevation of skin on the neck
Innervation of platysma
CN VII, facial nerve
Origin of sternocleidomastoid
Sternal head: manubrium of the sternum, clavicular head: medial, third of the clavicle.
Insertion of the sternocleidomastoid
Mastoid process of the skull
Action of the sternocleidomastoid
Unilateral: Rotation of head to opposite side
Bilateral: Flexion of the head and the neck
Innervation of sternocleidomastoid
CNXI, accessory nerve
