Ch 19 Analysis And Monitoring Of Gas Exchange Flashcards
When doing ABG where is it most often done
Radial artery
Indications for ABG
Evaluate ventilation and oxygenation, asses the patients response to therapy or diagnosis, and monitor severity and progression of a disease process
What are precautions and possible complications to ABG
Arteriospasm, hemorrhage, trauma to vessel, air or clotted embolism, hematoma, vasovagal response
The arterial sampling what should you not do
Never recap a used needle without a safety device
Never transport sample with needle attached to the syringe
What can clinicians do to avoid preanalytical errors
-Obtain anaerobically: an air bubble artificially increases PaO2 and artificially decreases PaCO2 and pH
- Properly anti coagulated : heparin that has not been properly incorporated will artificially increase O2 and decrease CO2
-Analyzed within 15 min: if not ran in time, O2 is artificially decreased due to oxygen consumption
What is pulse oximetry
Most rapid assessment of oxygenation. It is a noninvasive monitoring technique performed at bedside
What can pulse oximerty not distinguish
Cannot distinguish HbCO from Hbo2, reads falsely high in CO poisoning
