ch 14 human population and pollution Flashcards
what are the causes of the population explosion
- no natural predators
-better living conditions due to improved healthcare
-improved disease prevention and hygene
-growing food
what were the factors keeping population undercontrol
-predators
-waste buildup
-lack of space
-disease
-lack of food
what happened when manufacturing rates were increased
more industrial waste was produced which led to a release in chemicals that polluted water
more raw materials demand =
more quarries -> more habitats distroyed
more energy needed=
more fossil fuels burnt which increased co2 emissions
what is meant by bioaccumilation
accumilation of pestacide doses
what are fertalisers made of (NPK)
NITROGEN
PHOSPHORUS
POTASSIUM
what is eutrophication
the process in which the water body becomes overly enriched with nutrients, leading to an increase in the production of algae
how does eutrophication occur
fertalisers go into water
algea bloom
algea covers the surface of the water
too much competition for sunlight
plans at bottom of lake die
decomposers feed on dead plants
decomposers respire which takes up oxygen
lake becomes suffocated
all organisms die
what are the 2 chemicals that cause airpollution
-sulfer dioxide
-nitrogen oxide
what chemicals do burnt fossil fuels release
carbon dioxide and sulfer oxide which react to form sulfer dioxide
what happens when theres a high concentration of nitrogen oxide and sulfer dioxide
breathing problems occur
how is acid rain formed
when sulfer dioxide and nitrogen oxide dissolve in rain water
whatre the effects of acid rain
it falls onto trees which kills microrganisms then dissolves into soil and makes the water acidic
what is global dimming and what are its effects
when there are lots of solid particles in the air that reflect sunlight, this results in less light hitting earth and cooler tempteratures
