What is the problem with the term MMIWG?
missing is incorrect, they are kidnapped, murdered, etc
How is the state indifferent?
normalize dehumanization, women portrayed as less worthy of resources, learned indifference, exacerbated by media, refusal to view it as a criminal concern or social issue
What is tera nullius?
nobody’s land
legal policies enable this concept and land theft

What did the Indian Act do?
expansion of state control over Indigenous people: reserve and pass system, patrilineal identity and status, banning cultural activities, assimilation in residential schools
How to define genocide?
efforts against a distinct group of people with the goal of destruction or death
Canada calls it cultural genocide, ignoring death of actual people
What is the UN definition of genocide?
- killing members of a specific group
- causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group
- deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part
- imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group
- forcibly transferring children of the group to another group
How is the RCMP an institution of colonial control?
regulated pass system, apprehended children from their homes, targeted Indigenous women disproportionately
What did the idea of female disposability do?
maintain Indigenous women and girls domination through sexual violence, viewed as statistics not people, less attention in media, aging up girls
What systems of oppression fuel the violence against Indigneous women?
dehumanization, racism, indifference, genocide, land theft, kidnapping, poverty
How has the state ignored MMWIG?
blaming lifestyle choices, implying engaging in sexwork makes them less worthy & assuming they participate in this, ignoring systemic issues
