Ch 1 Tendons & Ligaments Flashcards
What is a chondrocyte?
A cartilage cell.
What are lacunae?
Holes in cartilage.
What is the perichondrium?
A layer of dense irregular connective tissue that covers surface of most cartilages.
What are the characteristics of Hyalin cartilage?
Most abundant type. Made up of collagen fibers. Matrix provides support and flexibility. Reduce friction between things. Absorbs shock.
What are the characteristics of elastic cartilage?
Strong but elastic.
Maintains shape of some organs like ears.
What are the characteristics of fibrocartilage?
Collagen fibers in parallel bundles.
Resists tension and compression.
Intervertebral discs.
What is appositional growth?
Cells divide and add cartilage on surface of existing cartilage.
What is interstitial growth?
Existing cartilage divides and produces new cartilage in between themselves.
What are the characteristics of cartilage?
Matrix is firm.
No blood or nerve supply.
Made of chondrocytes.
