Ch 1 Epithelium & Glands Flashcards
What are the characteristics of epithelium?
Little to no extracellular matrix Strong adhesion between cells Always a free upper edge and a lower side that will be attached to something Connective tissue beneath No blood vessels but there are nerves Can regenerate rapidly
What are the functions of epithelial cells?
Protection Secretion Excretion Absorption Sensory reception Some will have cilia on free upper edge
What is the basal lamina?
Bottom layer of protein that acts like glue
Half epithelial, half connective tissue
Connective tissue half has reticular fiber
What are the functions of stratified squamous epithelium?
Protection
What are the characteristics of non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium?
Moist surface
Cells DO NOT make keratin
What are the characteristics of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium?
Dry
Very hard
Makes up epidermis
What are the functions of simple cuboidal epithelium?
Secretion
Absorption
What are the functions of simple columnar epithelium?
Secretion
Absorption
Protection
What is a gland?
A structure that makes and then secretes a product
What is the function of endocrine glands (ductless)?
To secrete hormones that act as messengers
What is the function of exocrine glands?
To secrete a product onto the body’s surface or into body cavity
What is the function of a goblet cell?
To secret mucin which, when mixed with water, creates mucous.
What is merocrine secretion?
Products and vesicles discharged at surface.
Method used by pancreas.
What is apocrine secretion?
Involves loss of cytoplasm
Product accumulates at top of cell and entire tip pinches off
Used by mammary glands
What is Holocrine secretion?
Product is stored in cytoplasm and cell has to rip open and die in order to release it
Used by sebaceous glands(oil)
