Characteristics of vertebrates
Dorsal hollow nerve cord forming brain and spinal cord
Notochord- a stiffened rod below spinal cord, usually replaced by vertebrae
Segmentation- repeating structures; abs, ribs, vertebrae

What is the anatomical position?
The reference position
Characteristics of anatomical position
Subject is standing up Head and eyes facing observer Feet flat on floor and together Arms down at sides Palms flat and facing forward Go by patient's right and left
What is superior?
Above/closer to the head
What is inferior?
Below/ farther from the head
What is cranial?
Head/superior
What is caudal?
Tailbone/ inferior
What is anterior/ventral?
Closer to front
What is posterior/dorsal?
Closer to the back
What is lateral?
Farther from the midline
What is medial?
Closer to the midline
What is superficial?
Closer to the body’s surface
What is deep?
Farther from the body’s surface
What is proximal?
Closer to place of attachment
What is distal?
Farther from place of attachment
