Ch 1 Integumentary System Flashcards
What are the layers of the skin?
Epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis.
What are the functions of the integumentary system?
Protection, regulate body temperature, sensory reception, excretion, synthesis of vitamin D, make and store lipids.
How does the skin protect the body?
Forms a physical barrier to water, bacteria, and everything else.
Melanin protects from UV light damage.
Immune system cells in skin.
What is excretion?
Elimination of waste.
What is a keratinocyte?
A cell that makes keratin.
What is a melanocyte?
A cell that makes melanin.
What is a merkel cell?
A touch receptor.
What is the stratum basale?
A single row of cells at the very bottom of the epidermis.
What is stratum spinosum?
5-10 rows of packed cells above the stratum basale.
What are dendritic cells?
Part of the immune system.
Performs receptor-mediated Endocytosis.
Found in stratum spinosum.
What is stratum granulosum?
3-5 rows of flattened cells that make large amounts of keratin.
Above stratum spinosum.
What is stratum lucidum?
Only found on thick skin.
Between stratum granulosum and stratum corneum.
What is stratum corneum?
Flat and full of keratin, dead.
Forms barrier.
Top layer of skin.
What comprises the integumentary system?
Hair, nails, glands, skin, some sensory receptors.
