What is tourism?
activities of ppl travelling to and staying in places outside their environment for not more than one year for leisure, business, and other purposes.
what is the UNWTO?
United Nations Worldwide Tourism Organization. they defined tourism.
What was the purpose of the Buchanan report, and what did it discover?
purpose was to review scope and impact of tourism industry. found that; causes economic growth, offers more job opportunities quickly that are wide in range, gov benefits from revenue. It’s an industry and experience.
Recreation and tourism, similarities and diffs.
recreation is social market, and tourism is spatial market. Sim. products/services and benefits. diff. performance evaluation, market segmentaiton, industry leadership.
Definition for a trip?
travel 80km or more from home.
Define traveler?
travels for any purpose (school, leisure, work, etc.)
Define tourist?
traveling for pleaser for more then 24 hrs.
Define visitor and same day visitor/excursionist.
Visitor is a tourist/ foreigner. Excursionist is somebody traveling at least 80km for less then 24 hrs.
Domestic vs Foreign tourist?
D: stays in country, at least 24h, 80km. F: in foreign country for at least 24 hrs. (inbound tourist) an outbound tourist is someone leaving their country.
5 compo. of tourism sector?
transportation 16% (train, bus, taxi, etc.), travel services 3% (trip advisors etc.), accommodation 11% (hotel, camp site, etc.), food and beverage 47% (bars, baker, restaurant, fast food), recreation and entertainment 21% (shows, outdoor events, sports, casinos, zoos, museums, etc).
What is the history of tourism (early civ - 1400 CE)?
Early civilization; Infrastructure, so traveling for military ,economic, and religious reasons (not leisure travel). 4800 - 300 BCE; Egyptian, Greek, traveled for gov business, trade, education, religion, social. The Nile was good for boat travel. 400 BCE - 400 CE; roman and chinese, lots of trading routes, rise of leisure travel, so would travel for good like silk and spa. 400 - 1400CE; middle ages, fall of roman empire, peace and prosperity failed so makes for souvenirs and stories.
What is the history of tourism (1350CE - 1939)?
1350CE; Pandemic, 50-60% of europe died, 100 million global deaths, spanned 50 yrs. 1400-1700CE; renaissance, peace, focus on art philosophy and culture. 1600-1800CE; Le grand tour, linked to education (kids sent away). 1800-1939; INdustrial revolution, planes, trains, and automobiles (air travel starts in 1903).
What has toursim looked like since the turn of the 20th century?
1915-1918; WW1, less time and money, more safety concerns. 1918-1929; the roaring 20s, post war optimism. 1929-1939; the great depression, no time or money, travel to seek work. 1929-1945; WW2, not safe to travel, technological advances., emergence of middle class. Tourism then also affected by terrorism, the pandemic, etc.
What are the necessary conditions for tourism?
Ability; time, money, accessibility, infrastructure (transport, accom, food). Willingness; safety, attraction
How has tourism grown?
advancements in transportation, introduction of computer systems, internet an d e-commerce, more disposable incomes, more stressful lifesyles, declining cost of travel, advances in media coverage, better marketing and promotions, common currencies, better education, easing of gov restrictions, political stability
