Q

as you descend

A

-the pressure increase and volume decrease ( boyels law)
- as you go 30 metres down, your lungs volume will be 1/4 and as u ascend they’ll be 4x their size
- changing in the volume leads to change in gauge pressure
- p total = p atm + pgh

Q

divers breathe

A

high pressure air, will experience:
- high p02 and pn2 ( daltons law)
- gas solubility in tissues will increase the gas partial pressure ( henrys law) , henrys law state the concntaration/solubilty of the gas in the liquid is directly proportional to its partial pressure gas above the surface

Q

decompression sickness is

A
  • rapid pressure reduction
-when the solibulitty of n2 and 02 increases in the tissues and the blood and causes a problem in the ascend.
  • aka the bends , little bubbles

7
Q

as the divers ascend

A

the ambient pressure will reduce and the gas will come out of the solution

Q

divers need to ascend –

A

slow, 10m/min , to get rid of the excess micro bubbles through the lungs by normal respiration

9
Q

what happens if the diver ascends quickly

A
  • the gas won’t have enough time to be expelled by respiration
  • bubbles will begin to form all over the body
  • the body has mechanisms to get read of excess 02 but not n2

effective treatment is by

Q

commercial divers who dive deeper than 60 metres use

A

heliox or try mix where the n2 is diluted or replaced by other gas as helium or argon

Q

symptoms can show after

A

24hrs bc some tissues as bone marrow and fatty tissues take longer to get rid of excess gas .
that’s why u can’t travel

Q

other forms of DCS

A
  • sudden loss of cabins pressure in the airplane , need to wear a mask to avoid hypoxia or dcs
  • caissons disease from underground
  • spacewalker bc their suits work at 1/3 of p atm and they must decompress 2 hours beforehand
