Cerebral Spinal Fluid Flashcards
Define cerebral spinal fluid
Filtered blood plasma that bathes brain and spinal cord providing nutrients
Define choroid plexus
3 groups of blood capillaries in the ventricles that filters blood plasma into ependymal cells
- makes CSF
Define ependymal cells
Cells found between the capillaries and the ventricles
What are the 3 main ventricles in the brain?
Lateral ventricle, 3rd ventricle and 4th ventricle
Step 1 of CSF flow
Oxygenated blood leaves heart through arteries and goes into lateral ventricle, 3rd ventricle, and 4th ventricle’s choroid plexuses
Step 2 of CSF flow
CSF leaves choroid plexuses and goes into lateral ventricle
Step 3 of CSF flow
CSF leaves lateral ventricle, goes through interventricular foramen and stops at 3rd ventricle
Step 4 of CSF flow
CSF leaves 3rd ventricle through the cerebral aqueduct and goes to the 4th ventricle
Step 5 of CSF flow
CSF leaves 4th ventricle and goes up and down spinal cord
Step 6 of CSF flow
CSF leaves 4th ventricle through the lateral and medial apertures and goes to subarachnoid space
Step 7 of CSF flow
CSF leaves subarachnoid space and goes to the arachnoid villi of the dural venous sinuses
Step 8 of CSF flow
CSF leaves the arachnoid villi of the dural venous sinuses and becomes deoxygenated blood which goes back to heart and lungs
