Cerebral Palsy Flashcards
Childhood concerns r/t Cerebral Palsy
floppy (rag doll like) - more often
hyper-reflexia (90 degree positions)
inertia - just there, don’t do anything
persistent stepping reflex/poor (persistence of rudimentary reflexes)
reaching for toys (developmental age)
6months
tonic neck reflex disappears at what age
6 months
*huge delay if child doesn’t have good neck control at 6 mos. of age, t or f
true, true delay
at what age are children diagnosed with CP
2-3 years of age
how do we detect CP
failure to achieve motor (fine/gross) milestones
the most common CP
spastic CP
does CP advance/progress?
no, its ecstatic encephalopathy - doesn’t get any worse
what is CP?
a permanent disorder which affects movement and posture which can lead to limitations
can be mild (1 limb) to tetraplegia (all limbs-bedridden)
at what point in time does CP occur?
prenatally (exposed to infection)
intranatally (nuchal cord, birth asphyxia, placenta abruptia causing ischemia)
postnatally (shaken baby)
Causes or associations r/t with of CP
intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) death of white matter - periventricular leukomalacia loss of neurons narrow gyri wider sulci atrophy of the brain
4 types of CP
Spastic - most common - tense/scissoring of LE
Atheoid - slow movements involving all extremities (withering) - kernicterus (bilirubin)
Ataxic - injury to cerebellum - coordination) clumsy
Dystonic - spasticity and athetosis combined
hemi-plegic presentation
arm and leg on 1 side
paraplegic presentation
both legs
Di-plegic presentation
both legs or slight involvement elsewhere
