Cerebral Cortex Flashcards
Cerebral cortex
Made of layers on the outer surface of the brain
Divided into two halves
Joined by two bundles of axons called the corpus callosum and the anterior commissure
Corpus callosum
Connects right and left sides of the brain
The four lobes of the cerebral cortex?
Occipital
Parietal
Temporal
Frontal
Occipital lobe
Highly responsible for VISION
AKA the primary visual cortex
Parietal lobe
Guides us/ directs us
Monitors all the information about eye, head, and body positions and passes it on to the Brian areas that control movement
Contains the post central gyrus
Parietal lobe functions
In the lake she read
Intelligence Telling right from left Language Sensation Reading
Central sulcus
Parietal lobe
A deep groove in the surface of the cortex
Postcentral gyrus
Parietal lobe
Primary somatosensory cortex
Responsible for touch sensations and information from muscle-stretch receptors and joint receptors
Temporal lobe
Primary auditory cortex
essential for spoken language
Responsible for some emotional behavior
Damage to temporal lobe = Kluver- Bucy syndrome
Temporal lobe functions?
Spencer bet me her email
Speech Behavior Memory Hearing Vision Emotions
Temporal lobe
Al?
Wernicke?
Broncos?
Al= primary source for hearing
Wernickes= spoken language (understand)
Broncos= repeat what we hear
Frontal lobe
Primary motor cortex
Contains the prefrontal cortex and the precentral gyrus
Makes us different from other species
Responsible for higher functions: abstract thinking and planning
Allows for regulating of impulsive behaviors and the control of more complex behaviors
Last part of the brain to mature
Precentral gyrus
Frontal lobe
Responsible for the control of fine motor movement
Prefrontal cortex
Frontal lobe
center for all sensory information and other areas of the cortex
Frontal lobe functions?
Most reasonable bees meet people here
Ability to remember recent events “working memory”
Movement Reasoning Behavior Memory Personality hesitation Mediates the things we want to do
Says DON’T DO THAT
