Cerebellum Flashcards
Arbor vitae
“tree shaped” branching white matter of the cerebellum
Folia
“folded” gray matter at the periphery of the cerebellum. Increases the surface area of the gray matter
Deep nuclei
collections of cell bodies buried deep within the white matter of the aror vitae
Anterior lobe
Most ventral lobe of the cerebellum. roughly, receives the ascending senory spiocerebellar tracts
Posterior lobe
most dorsal lobe of the cerebellum. Roughly, receives motor information from the cerebral cortex, via the corticopontocerebellar pathway
Floccuulonodular lobe
most oddly shaped lobe of the cerebellum. Roughly, receives equilibrium information from the vestibulococerebellar pathway
vermis
central area of the cerebellum, connecting the two cerebellar hemispheres and site of falx cerebelli splitting the two hemispheres
cerebellar (S, M, I) peduncles
white matter tracts connecting the cerebellum to the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata, respectively
tentorium cerebelli
reflected dural fold runninghorizontally within the transverse fissure and separating the cerebrum superiorly from the cerebellum inferiorly
falx cerebelli
reflected dural fold running vertically, inferior to tenorium cerebelli, separating the 2 hemispheres of the cerebellum
spino, reticulo, and olivocerebellar pathways
Ascending sensory pathways bringing afferent ipsilateral proprioceptive info from skeltal muscles to the cerebellum
reticulo, reubo, vestibulospinal pathways
efferent motor pathways brining motor information to the skeletal muscles to coordinate posture and balance. Cerebellar neurons join these pathways to deliver motor information from the cerebellum
cerebellovestibular and median longitudinal fasiculus
Efferent cerebellar pathways to take information regarding posture and balance to the vestibular and visual areas
Corticopontocerebellar tract
Descending motor information from the cerebral cortex, headed to the skeletal muscles, but diverted into the cerebellum via the pontine nuclei of the middle cerebellar peduncle. Lets the cerebellum evaluate and modify motor plans from the cerebral cortex
Dento(rubro) thalamic pathway
Ascending pathway from the cerebellum to the core, used by cerebellum to deliver an “edited” mo0tor plan back to the cortex
