Cephalosporins Flashcards
1
Q
Cephalosporins
A
- most widely used group of antibiotics
- similar to penicillin structure but has low toxicity, and has beta lactam antibodies
- MOA is to bind to penicillin binding protein and disrupt cell wall synthesis
- resistant to beta lactamase (so used when penicillins will not work)
- Prototype Cephalosporin is Ansef

Q
Generations of Cephalosporins
A
1st generation primarily used against gram positive bacteria
2nd generation has increased activity against gram negatice microorganisms
3rd generation is primarily against gram negative organisms
4th generation is basically same as 3rd but more resistant to beta-lactamase producing microbial stains
