Aminoglycosides
A
- extremely potent bactericidal antibiotics that are usually reserved for serious or life-threatening infections
- most commonly used include GENTAMICIN, amikacin, and tobramycin
- only used on gram - organisms
- commonly used with other antibiotics like penicillins, cephalosporins, & vancomycin

- serious toxicities such as nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity, ototoxicity, & hypersensitivity

A
- poorly absorbed from an intact intestinal tract but rapidly absorbed parenterally, also comes in some topical preparations
- no pill form
