Aminoglycosides

A
  • extremely potent bactericidal antibiotics that are usually reserved for serious or life-threatening infections
  • most commonly used include GENTAMICIN, amikacin, and tobramycin
  • only used on gram - organisms
  • commonly used with other antibiotics like penicillins, cephalosporins, & vancomycin

A
  • poorly absorbed from an intact intestinal tract but rapidly absorbed parenterally, also comes in some topical preparations
  • no pill form
