Bacterial infection of lower dermis and subcutaneous tissue
What are the common causative organisms of cellultitis?
Staph aureus
Strep pyogenes
What are risk factors for developing cellulitis?
Immunosuppression
Ulcers/wounds
Obesity
Lymphoedema
What are the features of cellulitis?
Warm, red, painful skin
Poorly defined border
Systemic features
What are complications of cellulitits?
Necrotising fasciitis
Gas gangrene
Sepsis
How is cellulitis managed?
Mark border of erythema - track spread
Rest + elevate area
PO flucloxacillin (erythromycin)
Analgesia
What is erysipelas?
Superficial form of cellulitis - effecting upper dermis
What are the features of erysipelas?
Sharp raised border
Red, warm skin
How is erysipelas managed?
Analgesia
Elevation
Oral flucloxacillin
