Autoimmune sub epidermal blistering skin diseae
What are the features of bullous pemphigoid?
Tense fluid filled blisters
Itchy
What can trigger bullous pemphigoid?
Injury Infection Drugs - gliptins - abx - furosemide
What is the pathophysiology of bullous pemphigoid?
Attack on basement membrane of epidermis by IgG +/-IgE and T lymphocyres
Target type XVII collagen - associated with hemidesmosomes
How is bullous pemphigoid distinguished from pemphigus vulgaris?
Bullous pemphigoid = Nikolsky -ve
Pemphigus vulgaris = Nikolsky +ve
What is the Nikolsky sign?
Slight rubbing of the skin results in exfoliation of the outer layer
How is bullous pemphigoid diagnosed
Refer to dermatology
Skin biopsy
How is bullous pemphigoid managed?
Oral corticosteroid + PPI
