Cells Energy Flashcards
Equation of photosynthesis
CO2 + H2O + Energy = C6H12O6 + O2
What are pigments?
Molecules that absorb visible light. They absorb certain wavelengths and reflect others. Chlorophyll absorbs all colours except green and yellow
Chlorophyll and Process
It is embedded in thylakoids, which contain an enzyme that splits H2O into hydrogen and oxygen ions. Oxygens form O2. Hydrogen accumulates in thylakoids creating a [ ] gradient that provides energy for ATP. CO2 from the atmosphere comes to make organic compounds (glucose) through the Calvin Cycle.
Cellular Respiration Formula
O2 + C6H12O6 = CO2 + H2O + Energy
Anaerobic Respiration
Occurs in cytoplasm, no oxygen present, 2 ATP Energy from Glycolysis:
Glucose passes through the membrane via a protein pump, an enzyme splits it into 2 pyruvate molecules.
Aerobic Respiration
oxygen is present, occurs in cytoplasm and mitochondria, up to 36-38 ATP.
Pyruvate and O2 can go through the mitochondria in 2 cycles.
1. Kreb Cycle: 2 ATP, lots of CO2 and H2O
2. The Electron Transport Chain: 32-34 ATP, some O2 and H2O.
