Cells chapter two test Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from regions of higher concentration to regions of lower concentration
What is osmosis?
The diffusion of water through a semi-permeable membrane
What is a semi-permeable membrane?
Semi-permeable mean only certain substances can get through.
What is active transport?
USES ENERGY in the cell to move material through a cell membrane.
What is passive transport?
The movement of material through the cell membrane WITHOUT the cell using any energy.
What is endocytosis?
A vesicles surrounds a large particle to bring it INTO a cell.
What is photosynthesis?
The process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make food
Where does photosynthesis occur.
Chloroplast
What is cellular respiration?
The process by which cells use oxygen to produce energy from food
Where does cellular respiration occur.
Mitochondria
What is fermentation?
The breakdown of food without the use of oxygen
What is a example of fermentation?
Yeast
What happens during interphase?
Cell grows
Cell copies organelles and chromosomes
What is mitosis?
A process of cell division that forms two new neclui, each of which has the same number of chromosomes
What is prophase?
Mitosis begins. The nuclear membrane dissolves. Chromosomes condense into rodlike structures.
