Cells Flashcards
1
Q
Lisosomes
A
- digest damaged cell structures, food, and bacteria
2
Q
A
3
Q
Endoplasmic reticulum
A
- helps process molecules made by the cell and transports them to their destinations
- rough ER
- covered in ribosomes
- makes new protein molecules
- smooth ER
- no ribosomes
- makes lipids
- rough ER
4
Q
Aerobic catabolism
A
- 1 molecule of glucose can produce 34 molecules of ATP
5
Q
mitochondrion
A
- “powerhouse” of cell
- makes ATP
- the number of mitochondria in a cell will depend on how much energy that cell requires
6
Q
Anaerobic catabolism
A
- 1 molecule of glucose can produce 2 molecules of ATP
- releases H+ and decreases pH
7
Q
Golgi apparatus
A
- transport vesicle come off the endoplasmic reticulum and fuse with the golgi apparatus
- transported substances are then processed in the golgi to form lysosomes and other cytoplasmic components
8
Q
3 Phases of catabolism
A
- extracellular digestion of large macromolecules to simple subunits
- Intracellular breakdown of subunits to acetyl CoA accompanied by production of limited ATP and NADH
- Production of NADH yielding ATP via electron transport; waste products (H2O, CO2, NH3, and urea) are excreted
9
Q
Endocytosis
A
- How large particles enter the cell
- pinocytosis and phagocytosis
10
Q
cyst-
A
receiving end
11
Q
tight junction
A
zonula occludens
water tight but not strong
ziploc bag
12
Q
belt desmasomes
A
zonnula adherens
strong but not water tight
13
Q
spot desmasomes
A
macula adherens
cardiac cells
strong but small
14
Q
microfilaments
A
help the cell to move
*help form cytoskeleton
15
Q
microtubules
A
the routes upon which the organelles move about the cytoplasm
*part of cytoskeleton
