Adaptime immunity Flashcards
1
Q
overview of B-cells
A
- in bone marrow
- hemopoietic cells make common lymphoid progenitor cell
- becomes Developing B cell, leaves bone marrow
- Mature/naive B cell goes into blood and cruises around checking out all the lymph nodes looking for its perfect mate.
- finds its perfect mate and can become memory cell or plasma cell
- plasma cell creates antibodies
2
Q
overview of T cell
A
- hemopoietic cell becomes common lymphoid progenitor cell which leaves and goes to thymus
- matures in thymus
- goes to lymph where they encounter antigens
- can either become memory cell, helper T cell, or cytotoxic T cell
3
Q
antigen
A
a toxin or foreign substance that initiates an immune response
Must be large, complex, and biologically relevent
think: protein
4
Q
epitope
A
sequence of amino acids that our immune system is going to bind to on the antigen
extremely specific
5
Q
parts of the antibody
A
- variable
- antigen binding sites
- light chain
- constant
- heavy chain
6
Q
MHC class 1
A
- “presents” a piece of OUR protein. (endogenous)
- genes
- HLA-A
- HLA-B
- HLA-C
- found on all nucleated cells and platelets
- reacts with CD8 (cytotoxic killer) cells
7
Q
MHC class 2
A
- “presents” a piece of protein from something the cell has phagocytosed.
- genes:
- HLA-DR
- HLA-DP
- HLA-DQ
- found on B cells, APC (antigen presenting cells)
- reacts with CD4 (helper T cells)
8
Q
CD8
A
cytotoxic T cells
9
Q
CD4
A
T Helper cells
