cell structure (viruses) Flashcards
what is a virus?
nucleic acid surrounded by protein
what is the structure of a virus?
core of genetic material, protein coat=capsid, attachment proteins
how do viruses replicate?
use host cells
how do viruses use host cells?
use their attachment proteins to bind to complementary receptor proteins on the surface of host cells
why can some viruses only infect one type of cell?
different viruses have different attachment proteins and therefore require different receptor proteins on host cells
why do viruses not undergo cell division?
because they are not alive
how do viruses replicate?
inject their genetic material into the host cell, then the host cell uses its own mechanisms to replicate the viral particles
