cell structure (prokaryotic cells) Flashcards
what is an example of a prokaryotic cell?
bacteria
what is the structure of the plasma membrane?
made from lipids and proteins
what is the structure of the cell wall?
made of murein- a glycoprotein
what is the role of a capsule?
made of secreted slime, helps to protect bacteria from attack by immune system cells
what are plasmids?
small loops of DNA, can be passed between prokaryotes
how is DNA found in prokaryotic cells?
doesn’t have a nucleus- free floating in the cytoplasm, contains circular DNA which is free floating
what is a flagellum?
long, hair like structure that rotates to make a prokaryotic cell move
what does the cytoplasm contain?
does not contain membrane bound organelles, only ribosomes
how do prokaryotic cells replicate?
by binary fission
how does binary fission occur?
circular DNA and plasmids replicate
main DNA loop replicated once but plasmids replicated many times
cell gets bigger and DNA loops move to opposite poles
cytoplasm begins to divide
cytoplasm divides and 2 daughter cells are produced
