Cell Structure Flashcards
What are cells ?
Basic unit of life
What are all living things composed of ?
one or more cells
What is the name given to an organism that id only made up of one cell? (give one example)
Unicellular e.g. Amoeba
What is always the magnification of the eye piece lens on a microscope?
x10
What are the 3 magnifications of the objective lens on a microscope?
x4
x10
x40
What are the structures inside the cytoplasm of all types of cells called ?
organelles
What is the function of the nucleus ?
Controls cell activities and contains genetic information.
What is the function of the ribosomes ?
The site of protein synthesis
What is the function of the cell membrane ?
Controls the entry and exit (movement) of all materials into and out of the cell
What is the function of the mitochondrion ?
The site of aerobic respiration and ATP production
What is the function of the cytoplasm ?
The site of biochemical reactions in the cell
What is the function of the chloroplasts ? (what do they contain?)
The site of photosynthesis. These contain the green pigment, chlorophyll which traps light energy.
What is the function of the cell wall ? (What is it made of?)
Gives the cell rigidity and supports the cell.
Made of cellulose fibres.
What is the function of the vacuole ? (What is it filled with?)
Acts to support the cell and regulates water content.
Filled full of water and solutes.
Name a single celled fungus that is used to make bread and beer?
Yeast
