Cardiologists
Person who diagnosis and treats cardiovascular disorders
Cardiology
Medical specialty concerned with disorders of cardiovascular system
Arteriosclerosis
Progressive disease of arterial walls that causes them to become thickened and brittle
Atherosclerosis
Plaque build up
Thrombus
When blood hemorrhages and causes plaque or a clot
Infarction
Tissue death
Ischemia
Tissue anemia
Angina
Chest pain and tightness caused by arteriosclerosis
Diaphoresis
Excessive sweating
Antihypertensives
Control blood pressure
Anticoagulants
Reduce clotting
Angioplasty
Repairing the affected vessels
Endarectomy
Fat deposits inside of the artery
Coronary artery disease
Any disease that interferes with the ability of the coronary arteries to supply blood to the myocardium
Myocardial infarction (MI)
Heart attack
Necrosis
Death of the heart muscle
Endocarditis
Inflammation of the inner lining of the heart and its valves
Mitral valve stenosis
When the mitral valve starts to narrow
Varicose veins
Enlarged engorged, twisted, superficial veins
Pulmonary edema
Fluid in the lungs
Aneurysm
Localized, abnormal dilation of a vessel
Angina
Chest pain caused by obstructions or spasm of the coronary arteries
Arrhythmia
Irregularity and the rate or rhythm of the heart
Bradycardia
Abnormally, slow, heart rate
Fibrillation
Abnormally, rapid, uncoordinated, quivering of the heart
Heart block
Interference with normal transmission of electrical impulses from the SA node
Tachycardia
Abnormally fast, but regular rhythm
Bruit
Soft blowing sound heard on auscultation and associated with Valver action
Cardiomyopathy
Disease or weakening and heart muscle that diminishes cardiac function
Coarctation
Narrowing of a vessel, especially the aorta
Embolism
Intravascular mass that dislodges from one part of the body and causes blockage in another
Heart failure
Disorder that occurs when the heart is unable to effectively pump the quantity of blood required by the body
Hyperlipidemia
Excessive amounts of lipids in the blood
Hypertension (HTN)
Elevated blood pressure
Hypotension
Low blood pressure
Mitral valve prolapse (MVP)
Structural defect in which the mitral valves leaflet prolapse into the left atrium
Palpation
Sensation of an irregular heartbeat described as pounding
Peripheral artery disease (PAD)
Common circulatory disorder characterized by reduced flow of blood to extremities
Phlebitis
Inflammation of a deep vein
Syncope
Partial or complete loss of consciousness
Thrombosis
Abnormal condition in which a blood clot develops in a vessel
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
Blood clot, that forms in the deep veins of the body
Electrocardiography (ECG/EKG)
Procedure that graphically records, the spread of electrical excitation to different parts of the heart
Angiography
Procedure, that records, a radiographic image of inside of a blood vessel
Coronary angiography
Specialized type of angiograph that helps diagnose stenosis or obstructions a.k.a. heart catheter
Doppler US
Ultrasonography used to access the direction and speed of blood flow through blood vessels by reflecting soundwaves
Echocardiography
Ultrasound test that produces moving images of blood, passing through the heart valves and chambers
Magnetic resonance angiography
Type of MRI that provides highly detailed images of blood vessels
Cardiac catheterization
(CC)
Passage of a catheter into the heart through vein
Angioplasty
Endovascular procedure that reopens narrow blood vessels
Percutaneous trans luminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA)
Angioplasty of the coronary arteries that involves insertion of a balloon catheter
Cardiac ablation
Procedure, in which a catheter inserted through a vein in the growing and thread it to the heart
Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG)
Placement of a vessel, graph from another part of the body to bypass a blocked area a.k.a. open heart
Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)
Small battery, powered device, inserted within the chest of a patient who is at risk for developing arrhythmia
Open heart surgery
Surgical procedure in which the sternum is cut, half vertically to open the chest and expose the heart
Defibrillation
Life-saving emergency treatment to restart the heart and cardio respiratory arrest
Cardioversion
Defibrillation technique using low energy shocks to reset the heart rhythm
Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE)
Lowers bloop pressure by inhibiting the conversion of angiotensin
Anti-hypertensive
Angiotensin ll receptor blockers (ARBs)
Lowers blood pressure by blocking the angiotensin to enzyme from causing vasoconstriction
Antiarrhythmics
Prevent or correct cardiac arrhythmias
Anticoagulants
Prevent formation of clots
Diuretics
Increase excretion
