Cardiovascular system Flashcards
Which system consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood?
circulatory system
What does Cardio mean?
Heart
What does Vasculature mean?
vessels
What system’s main role is to supply oxygen/nutrients to the cells and remove waste?
cardiovascular system
What is the main organ responsible for keeping the blood circulating via the body?
heart
What is the heart made up of?
muscular tissue
What carries the blood around the body?
vessels
How many chambers make up the heart?
four
What are the top chambers called?
right and left atrium
What are the bottom chambers called?
Right and left ventricle
what happens when the heart stops pumping?
life ceases within minutes
How many layers is the heart made of?
three
What are the 3 layers of heart?
endocardium, myocardium, and pericardium
What is the endocardium?
smooth, delicate, inner lining of atria, and ventricules
What is the bottom tip of the heart called?
apex
What is the heart’s top called
base
how many primary circulatory loops are there?
2: pulmonary circulation loop and the systemic circulation loop
What is the myocardium
muscular wall, makes up bulk of hear, left ventricle is thick to force blood via the arteries that lead to the body
What is the pericardium?
thin, but sturdy outer membrane, has 2 layers of its own
What are the two layers of the pericardium?
visceral and parietal
what is the visceral pericardium?
adheres to the myocardium
what is the parietal pericardium?
contains the whole heart like a sac
pericardial cavity
fluid-filled sac between the visceral and parietal layers
how many pumps does the heart have?
two
Which chamber receives blood in the heart?
atria
Which ventricle is thicker and larger?
left ventricle bc it sends blood to entire body
What is the flow for the pulmonary circulation?
Right Atrium - tricuspid valve- right ventricle - pulmonary semilunar Valve - arteries
What is the systemic circulatory loop?
Pulmonary vein - left atrium - mitral valve- the left ventricle - aortic semilunar valve- aorta
What are the walls that divide the four chambers of the heart?
Septa (singular septum)
What are the septums that divide the atria?
interatrial septum
What are the septa that divides the ventricles?
interventricular septum
What are the atrium and ventricle sides are connected by?
atrioventricular valve AV
What is the valve that goes from the right atrium to right ventricle
tricuspid valve
What is the AV valve of the left atrium and left ventricle?
bicuspid valve or mitral valve
Where does the blood supply comes from?
capillary networks
What is the process by which the heart receives its own blood supply
coronary circulation
What is the big pipe that receives all the oxygenated blood that comes from the heart?
aorta
