Carbon Cycle Eq2 Flashcards
What is energy security
Having reliable, affordable and easy access to a natural resource for the purpose of energy consumption
UK’s new energy strategy 2022
Reduce reliance on imports
Increase use of nuclear energy
Increase north sea oil contracts
Increase wind power
Why is there a mismatch between locations of conventional fossil fuel supply and regions where demand is highest
Countries in South America and Africa contribute to the supply of fossil fuels but can’t afford to access it themselves
Middle east doesn’t have high demand
USA and western Europe need to import oil to meet its needs
What is the energy mix
Combination of different available for energy sources used to meet a country’s total energy demand
What is primary energt
Raw energy sources used directly - original form of energy before any conversion
What is secondary energy
Energy forms produces from primary sources - generated and distributed to power homes and businesses through power lines and infrastructure
What is domestic energy
Energy resources sourced within a country’s borders, enhancing energy security and reducing dependence on imports
What is overseas energy
Energy resources imported from other countries
Can expose a country to global supply risks
What is renewable energy
Energy from natural processes that are continuously replenished
What is non renewable energy
Finite resources that deplete with use
Challenges to converting to 100% renewable energy
Solar farms are most effective in areas with a lot of sun (e.g deserts) but demand is not high in these areas
How has Norway’s energy mix changed over time
Used to be 40% hydropower, 50% oil, 6% coal
Now is 50% oil and gas, 40% hydropower, less than 1% coal
Why does Norway’s energy mix look like this
Mountainous with lots of rainfall, so hydroelectric power is practical
Only makes up 40% because it is expensive to transfer it from remote regions to urban areas
Deep water drilling technology allowed them to access more oil
Norwegian government doesn’t allow foreign companies to own primary energy
How has the UK’s energy mix changed over time
Used to be 60% oil and gas, 35% coal
Now us 70% oil and gas, 15% coal, nuclear energy use has increased
Why does the UK’s energy mix look like this
Privatisation means companies control energy mix
UK is having to import more as north sea oil stores decline
Coal use decreased due to discovery of north sea oil and gas
