California Plant Communities Flashcards
Explain what a plant community is.
A group of plant species that interact with each other and their environment
What are the 4 factors that influence the type of plant community that determine where a plant can live?
- Biotic Factor
- Edaphic Factor
- Physiography
- Climate
What are biotic factors?
- Human use
- history
- other animals
- other plants
What are edaphic factors?
- Soil: it’s physical and chemical composition
- minerals
What is physiography?
topography = slope, terrain, elevation, canyons, and ridges
What is climate?
temperature, winds, fire, solar radiation, water
Explain how we determine if a plant is dominant.
- The size of the plant.
- The abundance relative to other plants in the community.
- Its effect on the community.
What is a woodland?
Woodlands have trees but they are spread out
What is a forest?
Trees are closer together.
What is a scrub?
a plant community made mainly of desert shrubs and bushes
Explain the process of ecological succession.
- A disturbance happens
- plants return maybe same or different kind
- A plant community will change gradually into another plant community over many years
What boundaries do plant communities have?
None. Some plant communities will overlap into the next plant community
