C6 - Redox Reactions Flashcards
What is oxidation?
Oxidation is the addition of oxygen to a substance?
What is reduction?
Reduction is the removal of oxygen of oxygen from a substance.
What two things does iron need to rust?
Iron needs both oxygen and water in order to rust.
What is the scientific name for rust?
Hydrated iron(III) oxide is the scientific name for rust.
Why is the Titanic rusting slowly?
There is little oxygen getting to it as it is so deep under water.
What is galvanising?
Galvanizing is covering the iron with a layer of zinc.
What is sacrificial protection?
Sacrificial protection is connecting the iron to a reactive metal so that it corrodes instead of the iron.
What is alloying?
Alloying is mixing other elements with the iron when it is being made.
Think of three ways of preventing rust that have not been named.
- covering the iron with grease
- covering the iron with paint
- covering the iron with tin plate
Chlorine accepts electrons. Is it an oxidising agent or a reducing agent?
Chlorine is a reducing agent.
When sulfur reacts with hydrogen it gains electrons from hydrogen.
(a) What has been oxidised?
(b) What has been reduced?
(a) Hydrogen has been oxidised.
(b) Sulfur has been reduced.
What is a displacement reaction?
A displacement reaction is where a more reactive substance pushes out a less reactive one.
