What properties do perfumes need?
- evaporates: perfume particles must reach nose
- none toxic: must not poison
- doesn’t react with water: so it doesn’t react with sweat
- does not irritate skin: so it can be sprayed on skin
- insoluble in water: so perfume is not washed off skin
What is an ester?
Esters are chemicals with pleasant smells. They are used in perfumes, and as solvents.
How are esters made?
Mixing an alcohol with an acid.
What is the word equation for an ester?
Alcohol + Acid = Ester + Water
What does volatile mean?
Volatile means something evaporates easily.
Explain how perfumes are liquid inside a container but a gas outside?
Some liquid particles gain enough energy to overcome forces of attraction and break off to turn into a gas.
What does soluble mean?
Soluble is when a substance dissolves in a liquid.
What is a solute?
The substance that has dissolved.
What is a solvent?
A solvent is the liquid the solute dissolves in.
Do particles in a gas or liquid have higher kinetic energy?
Gas.
