C6 - Alcohols Flashcards
What are the three main uses of ethanol?
- in alcoholic drinks
- as a solvent
- in petrol replacements
What does fermentation require?
- sugar
- water
- yeast enzymes
- no oxygen
- temperature between 25c and 50c
Why can ethanol be called renewable?
This is because it is made from plants which are renewable resources.
What is the word equation for ethanol?
Glucose = Ethanol + Carbon Dioxide
Why is fermentation carried out under controlled conditions?
- if the temperature is too cold the enzymes are inactive
- if the temperature is too hot the enzymes will become denatured
- is air is present then ethanoic acid with be produced
What is the other way of producing ethanol?
Reacting ethene (made from crude oil) with water.
What is the word equation for hydration of ethene?
ethene + water = ethanol
What are the advantages to making ethanol by fermentation?
- it is a renewable resource
- it is carbon neutral
- household waste can be used to make ethanol, reducing the need for landfill sites
What are the disadvantages of fermentation?
- large areas of natural forest may be cut down to make room for the crops
- the land might be better used for growing food for the local population rather than cash crops
- its not an efficient process
What are the advantages to the hydration of ethene?
- it is cheaper
- more economic than fermentation
What are the disadvantages to the hydration of ethene?
- it is non-renewable
