C1 - Paints and pigments Flashcards
What does a pigment do?
A pigment gives a paint its colour.
What does a binding medium do?
A binding medium sticks the pigment in the paint to a surface.
What does the solvent do?
The solvent thins the paint so it spreads easier.
What happens to a solvent when oil paint dries?
It evaporates which caused the oil to join together and form a layer.
What is a colloid?
In a colloid, particles of one substance are mixed and dispersed with particles of another substance - but they are not dissolved in it.
What type of pigment changes colour when it is heated?
Thermochromic pigments.
What do phosphorescent pigments do?
Phosphorescent pigments glow in the dark.
How do phosphorescent paints work?
They absorb and store light energy during the day and then release it at night.
Suggest why phosphorescent stickers do not glow for the whole night?
They have not absorbed enough energy to keep them going for that long.
