C2 - Metals and alloys Flashcards
What is reduction?
Reduction is the removal of oxygen.
What is electrolysis used for?
Electrolysis is used for the purification of copper.
Why is recycling copper cheaper than extracting it from its ore?
- it saves resources
- it saves energy needed to crush rocks
What can you heat with copper ore to get the copper out?
Carbon.
Why can smelted copper not be used to make things?
It is not very pure.
What is at the anode?
Impure copper.
What happens at the anode?
The anode dissolves in the electrolyte and impure copper collects at the bottom.
What happens at the cathode?
The cathode is coated with pure copper.
What are the issues associated with copper?
- getting people to recycle it
- sorting copper from other materials
- sorting the copper samples
What is the ionic half equation for what happens at the cathode?
Cu2+ + 2e- = Cu
What is the gaining of electrons called?
Reduction.
What is the ionic half equation for what happens at the anode?
Cu - 2e- = Cu2+
What is loss of electrons?
Oxidation.
What is an alloy?
An alloy is a mixture of a metal element with another element.
What does brass contain?
Copper and zinc.
