C4 - Metal structure and properties Flashcards
What are the properties of metals?
- lustrous
- hard
- high density
- high tensile strength
- high melting and boiling point
- good conductors
What holds a metal together?
A metal is held together by metallic bonds.
Why do metals have high melting and boiling points?
They have strong metallic bonds which require a lot of energy to separate them.
What is a metallic bond?
A metallic bond is a strong electrostatic force of attraction between close packed positive metal ions and delocalized electrons.
What is a superconductor?
A superconductor is a material that conducts electricity with little or no resistance.
What are the two types of superconductors?
Type 1: metals
Type 2: alloys
What are the benefits of superconductors?
- loss free power transmission
- super fast electronic circuits
- powerful electromagnets
What are the issues of superconductors?
The only work at very low temperatures.
