C4 - Atomic structure Flashcards
What is an atom?
An atom is a nucleus that is surrounded by electrons.
What is the nucleus of an atom made up of?
- protons
- neutrons
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons in an atom.
What is the mass number?
The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
What is the relative mass of a proton, a neutron and an electron?
Proton: 1
Neutron: 1
Electron: 0.0005 (zero)
What is the charge of a proton, a neutron and an electron?
Proton: +1
Neutron: 0
Electron: -1
What is an isotope?
An isotope is a different form of the same element, they have the same atomic number but different mass numbers.
What happens if an atom loses an electron?
It becomes positively charged because it has lost its negativity.
What happens if an atom gains an electron?
It becomes negatively charged because it has gained negativity.
What is a compound?
A compound is a substance that contains at least two different elements chemically combined.
What is the structure of an atom?
The inner shell must have two electrons and any other shells can have up to eight.
