C5 - Strong and weak acids Flashcards
1
Q
What do strong acids do when they are in water?
A
They ionize completely:
strong acid = hydrogen ions + other ions
2
Q
What do strong acids do when they are in water?
A
They ionize partially:
weak acid = hydrogen ions + other ions
this is a reversible reaction
3
Q
What does acidity depend on?
A
Whether the acid has lots of hydrogen ions or only a few.
4
Q
What do acids produce at the cathode during electrolysis?
A
Hydrogen.
5
Q
Why do weak acids not conduct as well as strong acids?
A
This is because they have fewer hydrogen ions to move through the liquid than strong acids do.
6
Q
What does the strength of an acid tell us?
A
How much an acid ionizes.
