C5 - Equilibria Flashcards
What is a a reversible reaction?
A reaction where there is a forward reaction and a backwards reaction.
What is equilibrium?
When a balance is reached between the amount of reactions and products present, the reaction has reached equilibrium.
What are the two factors that can alter equilibrium?
- temperature
- pressure
What happens at equilibrium?
- the rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the backward reaction
- the concentrations of reactants and products do not change
How can equilibrium be reached?
In a closed system where chemicals cannot escape.
What does equilibrium do?
Equilibrium will shift in a way to reduce the effect of the change.
What is sulfuric acid made from?
- sulfur
- air
- water
How is sulfuric acid manufactured?
1) sulfur is burnt in air to make sulfur dioxide
2) sulfur dioxide is reacted with oxygen to make sulfur trioxide
3) sulfur trioxide is reacted with water to make sulfuric acid
Why is 450* a compromise?
The forward reaction is exothermic so high temperatures reduce the yield and drive the equilibrium to the left. however high temperatures increase the rate of reaction.
