C5 Enzyme Flashcards
What is exergonic reaction?
A reaction that releases energy and occurs spontaneously. The energy of product<the energy of reactant.
What is endergonic reaction?
A reaction that absorbs free energy from surrounding and occurs nonspontaneously. The energy of product > the energy of reactant.
What is an enzyme?
A MACROMOLECULE that acts as a catalyst, a chemical agent that speeds up reactions.
What’s a free energy of activation?
Initial energy that reactants must absorb before chemical reactions starts. Energy required to break the bond and begin reaction. Enable reactants to overcome energy barrier.
How do enzymes speeds up reactions?
By lowering activation energy so that transition state can be reached even at lower temperature.
A + B = C, C breaks down into products where A is reusable. What is A B and C?
A is enzyme, B is substrate, C is enzyme-substrate complex.
What is an active site?
The specific region of an enzyme that binds the substrate that forms a pocket in which catalysis occurs. It is specific and fits the shape of specific substrates. Complimentary.
What does induced fit model indicates?
Active site of enzyme can change comformation and is flexible when a substrate binds to it. Additional weak bonds are formed and substrate is enfolded. This is so substrate fits precisely to the enzyme.
