Made up of two subunits with each subunits made up of proteins and ribosomal RNA.

A
Protein synthesis.

Why is ribosome found in prokaryotic cells?
A
Not membrane bounded.

Two types of ribosome.
A
Free ribosome found in the cytosol.
Bound ribosome attached to the outside of ER or nuclear envelope.

What is the function of free ribosome?
A
Most of the protein synthesized function within the cytosol. Eg : enzymes that catalyze the first steps of sugar breakdown.

Function of bound ribosome.
A
Destined for insertion into membranes for packaging within certain organelles such as lysosomes.
For export from the cell.
