C2 : Lipids Flashcards
What bond is lipid mostly consists mostly of?
It consists mostly of nonpolar covalent bond.
What is fat made up of?
One glycerol and three fatty acids.
What makes fats hydrophobic?
The nonpolar covalent bonds in hydrocarbon skeleton.
Fats is joined by what linkage?
Ester linkage.
What are the four characteristics of saturated fats?
- Made up of saturated fatty acids.
- No C-C double bonds.
- Maximum number of hydrogen atoms.
- Solid at room temperature.
What are the four characteristics of unstaturated fats?
- Made up of one or more unsaturated fatty acids.
- Have one or more C-C double bonds.
- Have kinks.
- Liquid at room temperature.
Why can’t unsaturated fats solidify at room temperature?
It has kinks in the fatty acids hydrocarbon chains.
What are the two types of fats of unsaturated fats?
Hydrogenated vegetable oils (trans fat) and unsaturated fats (cis fat).
What are the functions of fats in animals and where is it stored?
1g of fats produces twice the amount of energy produced by polysaccharides.
Plants store fats in seeds whereas animals in adipose tissues.
What are phospholipids made up of?
Made up of two fatty acids attached to one glycerol and one phosphate group.
What makes the hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail?
Hydrophilic head is made up of glycerol, phosphate group and other attachments.
Hydrophobic tail is fatty acid.
What is steroids made up of?
Carbon skeleton with four fused rings.
What is the function of cholesterol in steroids?
Precursor from which other steroids are synthesized such as testosterone.
